Curriculum Overview

The inner circle is the school’s core values of Respect, Self-Belief, and Resilience that everything else runs through. The 2nd ring (grey) is the statutory requirements that shape the curriculum and must be followed. The 3rd ring (pale blue) are the elements that we as a school feel are key and need to be part of our curriculum. Finally, the 4th ring (turquoise) is the process that we follow for each theme.

Lakeside Learners 50

The children can talk in detail about ‘What makes a Lakeside Learner?’ by  drawing on the values of Respect, Self-Belief, and Resilience. SLT, governors and the teaching team, looked at what Lakeside could offer beyond the curriculum and detailed 50 things that we would promise our children over the course of their time at Lakeside from EYFS to Year 6. There was an exciting launch assembly with each child receiving an A5 card on the ‘Lakeside Learners 50’. In the school atrium, there is a display detailing the ‘Lakeside Learners 50’ and photos of events.

Planning

Whole School Year Overview with Key Questions

Each cycle has a key theme eg ‘Let’s Explore’. Each phase across school takes a particular focus eg ‘Egyptians’. The cycle is split into two halves with

  • Weeks 1-6, A Picture in Time with a history focus.
  • Weeks 7-12, Location, Location, Location with a geography focus.

Within each key theme there is a ‘Big Idea’ or key question for both the history and the geography focus that the children aim to answer through a series of smaller questions and challenges eg ‘What was life like in Ancient Egypt?’ And ‘How important is the River Nile?’

Long Term Plans

Each Phase has two long term plans for a two-year cycle, an Plan A and Plan B. This has been put into place due to mixed aged classes and the need to ensure that by the end of the phase the children have covered the relevant national curriculum content.

All subject leads have contributed to ensure the relevant national curriculum content is covered and that there is progression throughout from EYFS to Year 6.

Medium Term Plans

Split into two sections Weeks 1-6, ‘A Picture in Time’ with a history focus and Weeks 7-12, ‘Location, Location, Location’ with a geography focus the medium-term plan details

  • Previous Learning

  • Big Writes/SPAG
  • Hook / rehook
  • Weeks with key questions
  • Art/DT projects
  • Sticky Knowledge (key knowledge that the children must know at the end of the unit)
  • Vocabulary
  • Local connection

Staff review and reflect each week the learning that has taken place and ensure the children are able to move onto the next question.
