At Lakeside, the intent of our Mathematics Curriculum is to provide children with a foundation for understanding number, reasoning, thinking logically and problem solving with resilience. By adopting a Mastery approach, all children, regardless of their starting point, will maximise their academic achievement and leave Lakeside Primary Academy fully prepared for the future, as being numerate is an essential life skill.
The National Curriculum for Maths aims to ensure that all children:
Become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics
Are able to reason mathematically
Can solve problems by applying their Mathematics
For Maths, our long term planning follows the NCETM Curriculum Mapping which is based on the National Curriculum 2014. (see Long Terms Plans) Teaching resources and materials are adapted by teachers to support the needs of each class.
By using a variety of planning resources we provide a bespoke teaching and learning experience that aims to interest and inform our children.
Using prior knowledge as a starting point for all future planning and teaching, we plan lessons which are designed so that all pupils make good progress.
Maths lessons are designed with a concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach, providing our pupils with the scaffolding required to access the learning at all levels.
Daily Morning Arithmetic Practise (MAP) ensures repetition of basic skills which require regular practice and overlearning.
We recognise the importance of times tables as a foundation for all areas of Mathematics, and therefore these are taught discretely.
We aim to provide our children with a variety of mathematical opportunities, which will enable them to recognise the importance of Maths in the wider world and make connections, using their mathematical skills and knowledge confidently in a range of different contexts. These opportunities allow children to see how Mathematics affects the world we live in.
To implement our intent, we ensure that our children are invested in their learning and are making a positive contribution to their lessons.
Children show confidence in believing that they can and will achieve.
Children are happy learners who talk enthusiastically about their learning and are eager to further their progress in Maths .
Children show a high level of pride in the presentation and understanding of their work.
Children are highly successful and fluent in Arithmetic due to Daily Morning Arithmetic Practise (MAP) .
The impact of ‘mastery’ and the emphasis on accurate use of mathematical vocabulary is evident during class/pupil discussions with children making connections and recognising relationships.
Children are becoming more confident with moving between different contexts and representations of Mathematics.
Teacher assessment of the depth of learning is also increasingly accurate.
