Physical Education

Intent

At Lakeside, we aim to provide a PE curriculum that pupils from Reception to Year 6 not only enjoy but also allows them to experience a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing. With an exciting and inclusive PE curriculum that focuses on the fundamental movement skills, we aim to inspire and enthuse all pupils and staff into a love of sport and physical activity. We endeavour to create many opportunities for competitive sport within and out of school with a primary focus on striving to better our own goals and targets. Our school virtues of ‘teamwork’, ‘be determined’ and ‘be kind’ are at the forefront of every PE lesson and are key values that are delivered through sport.

We intend that every child leaves our school with the competence, knowledge and understanding of how to lead healthy, active lifestyles and they are intrinsically motivated to continue to make good choices with regards to their health and physical activity throughout their lives.

Implementation

At Lakeside Primary Academy we value the importance of PE within our curriculum and employ a specialist teacher to help deliver and enhance sport within our school. We feel a specialist teacher is the best model to promote a curriculum that is of a high standard and use him to disperse his expertise throughout the school for all to benefit.

Children at Lakeside Primary Academy receive two lessons of PE every week; one delivered by the class teacher and one delivered by our sports specialist. Lessons are taken from a varied, carefully considered and bespoke PE curriculum map which focuses on developing fundamental movement skills through the mastery of application.

PE lessons at Lakeside focus on all aspects of sport by including ‘move’, ‘solve’ and connect’ elements within its delivery. We understand how sport is a great platform for children to develop holistically and this is something we are keen to promote within our school.  Qualities such as resilience, self belief, respect, teamwork, cooperation and tactical play being are also taught and celebrated alongside fundamental movement skills.

Impact

To measure the impact of our PE curriculum we assess against our learning objectives and identify any gaps in learning. Pupil voice, parent voice, lesson observations and monitoring are used to measure impact. Through pupil voice we are also able to monitor the children’s understanding of key vocabulary and their ability to articulate their ‘sticky knowledge.’

Staff CPD has and will continue to be a priority as we ensure that children continually receive high quality PE lessons, therefore ensuring the sustainability of the subject.
